Automatic transmission fluid (ATF)
Inside every transmission is a fluid that keeps its moving parts cool and well lubricated, and it often performs other vital functions too. Your vehicle depends on it to keep you moving since the transmission is where the engine’s power is manipulated and directed to the wheels.
Transmission fluid plays several critical roles in your vehicle:
Lubrication – Transmission fluid ensures that the various moving parts inside the transmission stay properly lubricated. Without this lubrication, these parts can grind against each other, causing excessive wear and potential damage.
Cooling – As your vehicle’s transmission operates, it generates a significant amount of heat. Transmission fluid helps dissipate this heat, preventing overheating, which can lead to severe transmission damage.
Hydraulic power – Transmission fluid is a hydraulic medium that facilitates the smooth and precise operation of your vehicle’s transmission system. It’s responsible for engaging and disengaging gears, enabling you to control your vehicle’s speed and power.
Types of ATF
ATF varies from the car model to model. Every company have their own ATF variety for their cars. Generally used ATF in most of the cars, is DEXRON III. Which is red colour. e.g. Toyota using “Type IV, WS” as ATF. Nissan uses ”Matic D” etc. Honda uses ATF DW-1. Mitsubishi uses ATF SP-III.
Continuously Variable Transmission Fluid (CVTF)
CVTF is the another new upgraded version of ATF for the new model cars. Which is clear colour fluid. Toyota uses CVTF FE. Nissan uses CVT NS2, NS3. Honda uses CVTF HCF-2. Mitsubishi uses CVTF J-4. Hyundai uses CVTF SP-CVT1. Ford uses CVTF Mercon V, Mercon LV. etc.
